Whitstable Castle started life as a residence for the Pearson Family in the late 1790’s. Today it is managed by The Whitstable Castle Trust and after the completion of an impressive two year long and £3m restoration project, Whitstable Castle was re-opened in September 2010.
Admission is completely free to the castle and gardens and you’ll find friendly volunteers who will be more than happy to take you on a guided tour of the building and grounds.
Of course, if you don’t have time to visit inside the Castle it’s probably because you’re too busy soaking up the stunning scenery in the castle gardens! Also having undergone an eighteen month transformation, you will see the mature oak trees lining the Gate House drive, and on the lower terrace you will find borders filled with many varieties of plants.
The gardens are completely wheelchair friendly and seating is provided throughout to allow you to rest and take in the stunning views and fresh sea air and, or if you are in the rose garden you’ll probably be enjoying the romantic scents that fill the air as you wander under the grand pagoda listening to the restored central fountain.
New for 2010, is the Castle Roof Garden which allows you to take in the glorious views across the Bay of Whitstable and if you visit in the evening you may catch a glimpse of the stunning sunsets famously painted by Turner.
The Wynn Ellis Room, a fine wood paneled room and the newly built ‘Orangery’ is where you will find a new Victorian tea room, with crisp linens, fine china and a wonderful vintage atmosphere. With a selection of traditional, homemade quality produce the modestly priced menu includes a selection of fresh sandwiches, cakes and cream teas, hot and cold drinks, light lunches and afternoon teas.
If you have a young family then the new children’s play area, equipped with an amazing array of features including a huge pirate ship is within easy view of the tea rooms terrace so you can relax in the sun with an afternoon tea while the children play.
And if you fall in love with the castle as much as we have you’ll want to hire it out for special occasions. Whether that be a private party, local classes, corporate/community events and makes a perfect venue for a wedding!
The staff at Whitstable Castle will be glad to welcome you so jump in the car and visit it today... parking is even free!
