About Deal Castle
For a fascinating day out in Kent look no further than Deal Castle.
Deal Castle was built by Henry VIII in 1539-40 as an artillery fortress to counter the threat of invasion from Catholic France and Spain. It was the largest of three forts constructed to defend the area of safe anchorage known as the Down. It is also one of the finest Tudor artillery castles in England, and among the earliest and most elaborate of a chain of coastal forts, which also includes Calshot, Camber, Walmer and Pendennis Castles.
Today you can explore every inch of Deal Castle, from the storerooms to the first-floor captain’s residence. Set in picturesque grounds, you can take a stroll around the defenses, admiring the bastions and canons as you go.
For the cyclists among us, why not use the beautiful cycle paths that link Deal and Walmer castles along the beachfront, a perfect opportunity to visit both castles and enjoy the fresh air!
