About Brenchley Gardens
This picturesque park adjacent Maidstone Museum was named after the great English explorer, naturalist and author Julius Lucius Brenchley. After traveling the globe, Brenchley sent home many artifacts which are now on display at the museum.
Its location in the town centre near the east station provides an oasis of calm and is a popular spot for locals and visitors. There is a Victorian bandstand where sunday afternoon concerts are held in the summer as well as other events throughout the year.
There are two prominent monuments; a war memorial made from Portland stone, designed to be a smaller version of Edwin Lutyens cenotaph in Whitehall and a piece of the houses of Parliament in Westminster, London. This was given by the mayor after World War II in honour of the gatehouse which was lost when Brenchley gardens was bombed during the war.
