Whitstable harbour lies on the North Kent coast at the mouth of the River Swale. The connection with the Canterbury and Whitstable railway, the Crab & Winkle Line, was the reason for the harbour's construction in 1831 to bring heavy materials, such as coal, from Newcastle to Canterbury.
It still remains a working harbour althoough now it is a major tourist attraction. Leisure and sporting activities have flourished here with yacht clubs, angling, kite and wind-surf activities all based around the harbour, along with the Royal National Lifeboat Institute.
The Fish Markets are extremely popular with locals and in the summer months, visitors flock to the stalls, which delight their customers with all manner of fresh sea food, including the famous Whitstable oysters.
The Crab & Winkle restaurant is also situated in the harbour, serving the catch of the day.
